Why Tracing Patch Cords can be costly? Where do I start?

Ibluef you have ever worked in a datacenter or a network closet, you will realize how many patch cords you will find at any given time. It is every technician’s hope that all cables are neatly organized and well kept. This is important because of the disruptions that working with these patch cords can cause. This is true if the tech was to work in the area and accidentally disconnect one of these cables.

Surprisingly enough many times, not all of the cables are labeled properly to document what each lead helps to connect. In order to help with this problem, technicians use equipment such as cable tracers that allow them to connect one side of the cable and send noise through the wire to then trace it one the other side with a toner.

The main issue here is that some of these cables could connect different servers that provide the company huge tasks (i.e. Databases, Webservers) and the impact on disconnecting one of these servers will cause the disruption of operations in the millions of dollars depending on the time and sensitivity of the disconnect. Luckily, some of the guys behind a computer have been working to address this problem. In order to prevent server from being disconnected accidentally, a new type of patch cords are being made right now. Here, LED lights have been embedded into each of these (cat6 or Fiber) plugs along with a button and an ultra-small battery on each end. This allows anyone to press the button installed on either end to make the LED lights blink consecutively for about 20 seconds without disconnecting the cable from either end.

This gives the tech a chance to figure out where each one the ends is plugged in to avoid costly mistakes as described above. It is also remarkable that these tracing patch cables do not use the power from the switch, but use the power from the embedded battery to make both ends blink. The advantages of these cords include the elimination of bringing servers down unnecessarily and the reduction of tech time in order to trace patch cords.

Tracing patch cables should be an easy task for anyone. Finding ways to make one’s job more efficient while doing it better is the way to go. If these patch cords can help you avoid mistakes and make your life easier, then has done its job.
